The Long Nav

October 10, 2015 Yvonne Bryght

In wilderness survival training there’s something they call The Long Nav.

The Long Nav is an experience taught and tested by skilled and willing Mountaineers. It consists of navigating your way out of the wilderness on a very specific trajectory. To start, you learn lots of short navigation skills in the lower woods that are fun, funny, exasperating and hold no serious threat to your health or well-being. If you fail, you get a Do-Over. If you need it, you get a 2nd Do-Over—no problem.

Then they take you out on a Long Nav. Much like The Universe and Life itself, these wily Mountaineers teach you skills you think you’re learning for the fun of it and then they drop kick you into an adventure.Essentially you know what you signed up for, but you naively ignore the reality of how much you’re going to need the skills you learn in the early days for survival and especially for thrival. Suddenly, the laughter stops and you realize you are stuck in the wilderness with less skill, less company and less certainty than you’d hoped to be travelling with.

In life, if you’re truly lost or simply ready to leave the wilderness, finding and accurately maintaining the trajectory that will lead you home — through long, boulder strewn landscapes interspersed with thickets, underbrush, stumps the size of small huts and swampy, marshy or fast moving water, plus any number of curious or hungry wild beasts — is an essential and pain-stakingly focused skill that requires all you know you’ve got…and more that you didn’t know you had.

When The Mountaineers test you, they drop you off at the top of a ridge, give you the compass reading for *home* and say, “See you in a half day—hopefully–within 60 feet of your compass outcome point—or you fail. Oh, and you’ve got your survival kit just in case we don’t see you by dark, right?”

When Life tests you, it isn’t always as supportive as those snickering, laughing, ho-ho’ing Mountaineers as they walk away from you down a well beaten path that is NOT on your compass trajectory point.

And here’s what you quickly realize: This compass point, this path, this direction, this tiny piece of concrete information and my determination are ALL I’VE GOT to get me where I need to go. And you begin.

Family & Business Constellations will give you your compass point; your way home; your best path out of the wilderness.

And it will give you the finest sense of how truly powerful, amazing and fabulous you really are. Because when you fall out of life’s “woods,” scratched, bruised, bitten and dirty, but EXACTLY where you wanted to be, you will have the biggest smile on your face you’ve ever had and you will know: I. AM. SUCH. A. BADASS.

Bring your wilderness. Bring your lack of skill. Bring your confusion, your problems and your obstacles.

Constellations will help you find your way Home — Home to your best and highest life path and trajectory.

Here is something else the Long Nav teaches you: you cannot get out of the wilderness alone—you have to have companions, partners, teachers, guides and help along the way.

In the wilderness as in Life, “Be Bold and Mighty Forces will come to your aid.” (–Goethe)

The next half-day Family & Business Constellation Workshop is Sunday October 11th from 9am to 1pm.
